The French architect Robert de Cotte designed in the 17th century the Poppelsdorfer Palace after a gothic moated castle. The baroque building was completed in 1740. Builders were the Cologne Elector Joseph Clemens and his nephew and successor Clemens August.

A wide chestnut boulevard connects the Poppelsdorfer Palace with the electoral palace. Both buildings house today administration and teaching rooms of the university Bonn.

The Poppeldorfer Palace also houses a "Mineralogical Collection". In the palace garden a "Botanical Garden" has been designed on an area of ca. 6 ha with more than 8000 plant species from all over the world. In the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden Bonn numerous exotic species are thriving. When in Bonn one of the most spectacular plant species, the titan arum opens inside a few hours its giant blossoms, thousands of visitors come by to watch this rare spectacle. A population of turtles has developed in the garden's ponds; they also hibernate here.
